With over 30% of land mass dedicated to green space, recreation programs tailored for residents of all ages, an award-winning Art in Public Places program, a pro-active business climate that embraces innovation and an intrinsic understanding of the balance between social and economic conditions, Palm Beach Gardens is much more than the ultimate vacation spot."
It was originally founded by John D. MacArthur, who sought to emphasize and preserve the garden theme, which makes our city a beautiful place in which to live.

We live in a quaint neighborhood on the east side of Long Beach called Los Altos. Our community consists of a lot of churches, great parks and elementary schools. It is definitely an older populated neighborhood. We are the youngest couple on our block (probably in all Los Altos! and our street is very quiet and suburban. All the homes were built in the 1950's, and we LOVE the vintage/antique styles, but our home is just small and plain, with a huge yard that yearns for ANYTHING to snazz it up!! We are dying to let our young, fun and unique styles shine through our homes decor & design; but after our recent wedding in May, me starting graduate school @ Cal State University Long Beach, AND just finding out we are expecting our first child...our budget is extremely tight and put on hold.

Situated about 4 - 6 miles out from the mainland, Long Beach Island is an 18-mile long Barrier Island that was happened upon by Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey in 1614. As Captain Mey sailed the Northern end of Beach Haven, he noted very rough tides through the northern inlet. He named the inlet âBarendegatâ, which means âInlet of the Breakersâ. This name has since been Anglicized to âBarnegatâ. Because of the length of the island and the lovely beaches, the island has been called Long Beach for the last several hundred years.
The tides of Beach Haven were so strong that even today, the coast is dotted with many shipwrecks. A lighthouse was constructed in 1835, but its proximity to the water combined with storms and erosion caused it to fall into the sea in 1855. A new lighthouse at Barnegat, âOld Barneyâ as it is locally known, was constructed in 1859 and is still standing today. In the summer months, visitors can climb to the top for a vantage view of the island and further.
Back before there were roads, the only way to visit Beach Haven was by boat. In 1886, a railway was constructed across the bay, which was subsequently destroyed by a storm. Today visitors without a boat can drive the causeway over Barnegat Bay to reach Beach Haven. There is no public transportation to Beach Haven.
Although Long Beach Island has over twenty separate communities, there are only about 20,000 year round residents. Both Beach Haven and Barnegat Light were developed as resort towns, other areas remained simply a place to relax and enjoy the ocean.
Beach Haven remains the premier spot in New Jersey for quiet relaxation by the ocean. Since Long Beach Island is only a quarter mile wide, visitors are close to both the sea and the bay. Only one town on the island has an amusement area, and there is no boardwalk. Beach Haven boasts some of the most naturally beautiful beaches on the east coast, as well as hundreds of boutiques and fine restaurants.
